HELLO SEPTEMBER!!

WELCOME to another school year.  We hope you had a wonderful summer! We are having a GREAT September month so far.  It's hard to believe September is almost over.

PHOTOS -   Photomaster Studios have already been in on September 8, 2023 to take all school photos. Retakes were done on September 15, 2023.  Retakes have returned and have been distributed to homeroom classes and will be sent home by the end of this week.

LATE - Please remember to sign in on the LATE binder at the main office.  You are considered late if you are not in your homeroom classroom by 8:35am.  Attendance is done within the first minutes of class.  After that time, you will be marked late.

LEAVING EARLY - If your student is leaving anytime during the day because they are sick or have an appointment, please ask them to sign out at the Main Office.  If your child is going home with another student and/or if that parent is picking them up, please send a note or an email to their teacher advising, or please call the main office and let us know.

Terry Fox Walk - The Terry Fox Walk is tomorrow morning, Friday, September 21, 2023.  Students are asked to bring in $2 to support the walk. Your child may submit more money for this good cause if they wish.  Please drop your money off to your homeroom teacher if you haven't already.  Make sure to dress for the weather as we will be outside walking and/or running.  The weather is looking nice and not too warm for this event.  The homeroom class that raises the most money will be awarded a pizza party.  We would like to thank Giant Tiger for their support.

Parking Lot - We are asking all students to go around to the back of the building when they arrive to school.  Students should NOT be hanging around the parking lot before school, on lunch break, or after school.  We want to protect our children from any accidents or injury as their safety is our utmost concern.

A Note from our Principal regarding Lockdown Drills - The safety and security of our students and staff is a top priority for Eric Graves Memorial Junior High and the Halifax Regional School Board. We have been implementing a number of measures as part of a comprehensive plan aimed at ensuring our school remains a safe place for our students to learn.

One of the procedures our school will be practicing is a lockdown drill. During a lockdown drill, classroom doors are secured and the students remain inside the room until instructed by the teacher to resume their activities. All exterior doors are locked and no one is permitted to enter or leave the building.

Students are kept inside the school and classrooms when circumstances make it safer to stay in the classroom rather than evacuate. Just as we prepare our students to properly respond to a fire drill, they also need to be aware of the proper response during a lockdown drill. These drills should be treated with the same level of importance as fire drills.

Please be assured that staff at our school will spend time discussing the importance of this procedure with students prior to running a drill. We will also take time after the drill to remind them that it was only a practice and there was no danger. When possible, our School Liaison Officer may assist us in conducting the lockdown drills just as the Fire Department assists with evacuation drills.

Please take the time to speak with your son/daughter about this procedure and reinforce its importance. We practice these drills to ensure our school remains a safe place for teaching and learning.

Please contact me if you have any questions about lockdown drills.  Thank you for your attention to this matter.

Regards,

Joseph MacDonald
Principal, EGMJH
